Film Review: The Thing (2011)

The Carpenter remake of the 50s SF B movie, The Thing, was brilliant. It had a good cast, great story and innovative special effects.

I had expected more from the 2011 so called prequel, after all the people making it must have seen the Carpenter film. In effect it just views as a workman like remake of Carpenter’s version, which is a real let down. It’s business like, and professionally made-but it’s pretty much a copy.

There must be a whole raft of films that can be rehashed virtually scene-for-scene, with the stats showing what percentage of the original audience will turn up plus a figure for a new audience component and you have approximate gross takings. You can work backwards from there to figure out your shoot costs.  It’s hardly about making new original movies.

Battlestar Galactica: All four series back to back

As an avid sci-fi fan, for some reason the new series of Battlestar Galactica (2004-2008) passed me by.

The original 80s series wasn’t up to much, as is the problem with most, tv/film SF. You really have to sort the wheat from the chaff to find science fiction with any depth, let alone a plot. Boy, was I surprised by this Battlestar Galactica series.
